加拿大人常说：“飞机是用来旅行的，火车是用来观光的。”在众多加拿大观光列车中，开往北方海港丘吉尔城的“哈得孙线”算得上精品。

　　这条铁路线全长1697公里，跑一个单程需要34个小时。如此之慢是为了方便游客细细观赏沿途景色。这条观光线是加拿大最北的铁路线，终点站丘吉尔港已靠近北极圈的边缘，是加拿大最古老的城市，其历史可追溯到17世纪末。丘吉尔港是以当时在这里大发横财的“哈得孙公司”职员约翰·丘吉尔名字命名的，此人正是英国前首相丘吉尔的先人。当年，丘吉尔和英国女王伊丽莎白二世就曾乘坐“哈得孙线”的老式豪华列车，多次光顾丘吉尔港。如今，这趟“怀旧之旅”已经成为加拿大最时髦的旅游线路之一，许多人都想“坐小丘吉尔的车，去老丘吉尔建立的都市”看看。就连好莱坞著名导演乔治·卢卡斯、柯波拉这样的“大腕”也乐此不疲。

　　丘吉尔港的另一个不寻常之处就在于这里是北极熊迁徙的必经之路，每年9月到11月，大批可爱的北极熊就会扶老携幼经过这里，丘吉尔城也因此被誉为“北极熊之都”。乘观光火车看熊是件非常有意思的事。这些熊有的是三四米高的庞然大物，有的却是憨态可掬的熊宝宝，它们并不躲人，还有的甚至会将头伸向停着的列车车窗并向里张望。

　　由于地处寒区，加拿大许多观光铁路线都是季节性的，但哈得孙线不用：五六月是观鸟季节，世界上迁徙距离最远的候鸟北极燕鸥、体态幽雅的加拿大鹤云集于此，遮天蔽日，蔚为壮观；七八月时，可以在小镇北面的哈得孙湾海滨观赏到3000头以上白鲸洄游的奇景；1月份还能看到绚丽的北极光。由于丘吉尔港的旅馆床位紧张，看熊、看鲸提前半年订不上房是常有的事，只有提前计划并精密按派方能保证阁下行住无忧，尽兴而归。

Fall/Winter
Weather in Churchill is variable and very unpredictable, especially due to wind chill*. The northwest wind can be vicious! Dressing in layers and windproof outerwear will help keep you warm, but be prepared for almost anything!

*Wind chill combines temperature and wind speed to tell you how cold the wind makes it feel outside. Cold wind makes your body lose heat much faster.

Spring/Summer
Spring weather in Churchill is similar to winter months in more southerly regions of Canada. Sub-zero temperatures can be expected. Churchill summers can be quite pleasant but day to day temperatures fluctuate widely. Warmer days do not occur until late June/early July. Winds ranging from a gentle breeze to gale force are a constant factor, especially along the Hudson Bay coastline. Occasional heavy fogs and even snowfall can be observed during summer months although a typical summer involves at least a few very hot days.

NOTE: Layering is important. Cotton is often a poor insulator. Synthetic fabrics such as fleece and polyester are better choices. A store specializing in outdoor clothing/equipment can provide guidance if you need to purchase any clothing.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN CHURCHILL?
Sunspot activity occurs in an 11 year cycle and this, in turn causes variation in the northern lights as a result of changes in solar wind. Generally, during the summer (May, June, July) when nighttime skies remain relatively bright, the aurora is not readily visible. Early fall (August, September) and late winter/early spring (late January through April) present better viewing opportunities.

Global aurora predictions can be found through the University of Alaska - Fairbanks Geophysical Institute website. These predictions are 'based on interpretations of satellite observations of active structures on the sun and of the solar wind between the sun and the earth.
